Due to some recent posts and the mysterous disapperance of our beloved fellow retrogamers Mike and Jeromy, a few members of the site have thought about creating a new podcast.  Therefore, this thread is devoted to planning a spin-off program, tentatively titled: “The Retrocast 2″

I think the best thing to do is just start throwing out some ideas.  Here are a few of mine below:

- Firstly, we should do this with respect for Jeromy & Mike.  We need to somehow acknowlege their contributions to sparking this conversation.  With that said, I don't think we should completely try to imitate their show, but perhaps use a few of their ideas (ie: “Going Going Gone” and perhaps bringing back “Games of the Week”)

- I think we should expand the realm of the show beyond 8 & 16-bit Nintendo.  It seems like it would be easier to create a cast about retro-gaming in general (ps1 and earlier).

- I think it might be best if we have a small group work on the show, no greater than 5 people.  If there's too many people than I think things would get too complicated.  However, if there's only 1 or 2 guys involved, they might get burned out too quickly.  In any case, people should have specific duties.  This may also cut down on the amount of work a single person has to do; hopefully making this a more fun deal.

- Maybe someone with the most time available or with the most drive could be the \"primary host\" and lead the project.  Whereas 3 or 4 of us could rotate in and out of a \"co-host\" position with the rest of us pitching in ideas, news, feedback, eBay auctions, doing sound editing, and that type of thing.

- It's always nice to have two or more people on the air at once, but I think if someone wanted to tape their own 15-20 minute featurette and have that spliced into the main show, it might be a good supplement every once in a while

- If we have a show we might as well make it around an hour long.

Disclaimer: Remember, that the disscusions on this thread are merely ideas and ideas are flexible.  So please don't bail just because one suggestion rubs you the wrong way.  Let's just express our differences sanely for the sake of the project.

I think that each of those ideas are good ones and in some cases Nick & I were thinking the same thing you were. Between him & I I'm not sure who has more free time, but I'm currently only working part times so I might have the most time available to work on stuff like this. We'll have to stay in touch to be sure. Speaking of which, my email address is the same as my forum handle AT gmail dot com.

Hey JungleRatRob, to answer your question from the other thread, I'd be willing to help. I've got a pretty busy college schedule, so I don't really have much free time during the week, but I'd be willing to help out with the web site, help look for content to talk about, and maybe be on the co-host rotation hemrawc spoke of.

I like hemrawc's ideas so far and there isn't much that I can think that he hasn't already put out there.

So it seems that we have at least 4 people.  I feel like that's a good number.  I think Rob might be a good point man for now, unless Nick has any objections.  What might be a good idea is to have both of you as permanent co-hosts.  I find that many podcasts (no matter how good the host) are boring with just one guy.  What do you guys think?

Also I think using these forums is probably the best way to communicate when we want to discuss things amongst everyone.

While we should probably keep throwing out ideas, setting some goals might not be like a bad idea.  Such as: when do we want to plan to have a test run and then when do we want to have the first episode complete?  Obviously a lot of planning needs to be done before and we've gotta sort through those details.  We need to decide how we are going to be able to record over Scype as well.

Maybe Hugues can help us out by setting up an RSS feed and putting this on iTunes.

@JungleRatRob: I sent you an email so you'll have my address.

Yeah a podcast with only one host is barely a podcast. Also goals sound good, Nick & I were gonna try a test run either next weekend (probably the 16th) or the week after. We've already got a rough outline of things we could talk about. What do you guys think of current gen systems? We want to focus on old games, but I've noticed that at least on Wii and DS there's a lot of remakes, sequels and retro-themed games that we could talk about. At the very least I'd like to mention what old games are released on the Wii's virtual console each week.

As for recording, we've looked around a little and there are a couple of pay programs out there for recording skype, but it looks like the easiest or at least most straightforward way to do it is have each person record their own audio to a file with a program like Audacity, which can then also be used to put the files together. I think that's what we should do since audacity can also convert back & forth from wav to mp3 pretty easily.

Also if we get hosting through godaddy it looks like they generate an RSS feed that people could subscribe to directly or could be submitted to iTunes.

Good Stuff!

I think we should shy away from current gen consoles (simply to maintain focus) UNLESS we're talking about a remake or Virtual Console games.  I would think that even new(er) games that have a retro-feel could be good potential topics.

I agree with the Audacity idea.  That's the only audio editing program that I have extensively used before and I've never had trouble with it. Plus, it's free!

If godaddy is easiest I say we go with that.  However, I'm sure there will be a cost involved.  I'm willing to pay if we divided it 4 ways (if that's possible).

What topics were you and Nick thinking?

Do you want to revive \"Games of the Week\" for the first episode?

The main thing I was thinking with adding current games is just to broaden the scope of the podcast.  It would still be a retro themed cast, but with a segment for whatever current game we're playing at the moment.  Nothing major, just a segment.

Yeah for games of the week I say we jump right in right away. After all the show is about video games, and for any given video game there could potentially be a lot to talk about. I've already got a couple ideas for games I could talk about.

@ Nick – Yeah, I think it might be interesting to do a quick segment about games that are currently being played.  I would just suggest not expounding too much if the game isn't retro.  But I like the idea.

@ Rob – What games did you have in mind?

Just to weigh in on a few topics:

I don't like 1 person podcasts, very boring to me, so I like the idea of 2 or more people for each show.  One thing I can't stand is when people all try to talk at once.  It's ok if you talk over someone and then stop, but when folks keep talking and the audio jumbles into a mess….yeah, that's bad.  I hear this a lot on stuff like the Player One Podcast and Retro Force Go.  At the same time, long silence is not a good thing either.  This could be corrected in the editing process, but removing talk overs would be a huge job (at least it sounds like a huge job).  Hopefully, we could get an episode recorded in the next few days.  I have the week of Oct 19 off and could possibly record 1 or 2 more shows then….

Unless we talk to Mike and Jeromy about it, I don't think we should use the “Retrocast” name or any of their segment names.  I wouldn't like it if someone started using my stuff without permission.  What do you guys think?

I agree with all of the above.

However, I think it would be OK to use some of their ideas.  We could still change the name of the segment.  I really like the eBay idea and games of the week.  We could try emailing Mike & Jeromy and ask if it's OK?  I'm not quite sure how difficult it is to get a hold of them.  But in any case, I really don't have a problem using a few of thier ideas as long as we change the name and at least try to get permission.  Whatever happens I still think part of our first should include some props for the original Nintendo Retrocast.  Maybe a little shoutout at the beginning of every show as part of the intro.

I know Nick & Rob kinda of have an idea of what they would like to do with this first episode.  Do you mind throwing out a rough outline of the show (if you guys have gotten that detailed)?

Also Nick brought up a good point: we do need to name the show.  I don't necessarily want it have the word \"Retrocast\" in the title either.  Do we have any ideas?

Here are a few of mine: BitWar Veterans, The Retro League,The League of Extraordinarily Retro Gentlemen, The Bit Team

What Time Zone do you guys live in?  I'm in central.

What day do you guys plan on doing the show?  It might be cool if everyone was on for the first episode (even if it was just to say hello).

Any news on GoDaddy.com?

Just my thoughts…

The day of would vary, I'm sure.  If nothing else, we could have everyone record a bit and then we could add that into the first show.  I like the names The Retro League and League of…..what about Retro Talk?

Retro-Poddin'

Retro-Convos

Retroback: A look back at yesteryear's video games

Retro Strikes Back

I'm cool with using ebay auctions and a game of the week type segment, but maybe call them “It came from EBAY!!!!” and “Retro Pick of the Week” or something like that…

Geez, I've edited this more times than I've posted in this thread!  I'm in the Eastern time zone.

I have written to M&J at the retrocast email, and am still waiting for a response. If this break is like the ones between the first seasons then we might not hear from them for months. I agree with hemrawc, we should give them proper credit for the show & direct people to the retrocast.
As for GoDaddy, I'm looking at the deluxe plan on this page:
** you don't have permission to see this link **
because it allows multiple subauthors. That way everyone could easily contribute news or post a show. Its $10/month which wouldn't be too bad if we split that. Plus we could register the domain for our podcast super cheap through them.
I was having trouble thinking of a name myself. I like BitWar Veterans and Retro Strikes Back. Retro Talk is good and simple, though there might be a podcast out there with a similar name. What about Retro Game Talk?
I'm in the Mountain time zone. As far as recording Nick & I were talking about trying something tonight, but I don't know if that would end up being the first episode or like a beta/test episode. I'd like if we could all get together for it too.

To answer hemrawc, I'm in the Central time zone.

I like the names, The Retro League, and Retro Strikes Back. Other possibilties might be:

Been following this thread and can't resist finally chiming in…

-First off let me say best wishes for your podcast. I wish I could contribute but I have so little free time right now (full time job+kids). I'd love to join you for some episodes if you'll have me.

-If there's anything at all I can help with please don't hesitate to ask. I haven't used GoDaddy as a host but I have several sites on another web host and have a bunch of experience with Wordpress and technical stuff in general. I'd recommend the GoDaddy route because they have good podcasting tools (the company I host through doesn't). They're targeting people who just want a no-nonsense blog or podcast. Looks like you're already leaning that way.

-I really like the Retro League name, I can't think of anything better.

-One thing that I think would work on a show like this would be having introduction & ending songs from retro games. i.e to use as bumpers for different segments or at the end of the show. I have a pretty good collection of those if it's something you'd be interested in (I'm sure y'all have large game soundtrack collections too).

No, but I can get it. The one time I tried it, the audio was scratchy, so I haven't used it since.

Judging by all of the comments, it looks like the wheels are really getting into motion on this thing. It looks like the <Yet_To_Be_Named> podcast will be off to a good start! ** you don't have permission to see this link **

Thanks Hugues for all the comments.  I'm sure you'll be hearing from us one of these days, whether it's to be on the show or simpley for help.  I like the music idea as long as we keep it retrogame related.  Like something from Anamanaguchi.  If anyone doesn't know who they are, look on YouTube for ** you don't have permission to see this link **.  That song is AWESOME!  Since we're talking about music, we should think about getting a catchy intro tune (that's legal of course).  Any suggestions?

I've found a few songs that are Open Source that we could use.  I was kind of looking for something a bit up beat like ** you don't have permission to see this link **, that's a little gamish, but kind of cool.  I like the feel of it)

So it looks like we're either in Central or Moutain time zones, which I think it's good since they're only an hour apart.  It should be easy to coordinate.

I've got to say that all the names that have been thrown out are pretty good.  We should try to narrow them down to two or three and have a vote.  I'm partial to The Retro Legue & Retro Strikes Back.   I do like the League of Extraordinarily Retro Gentlemen, but I suppose it would be too long of a name.  Maybe we could add it as a tagline or something.  But in any case we need to narrow the field and my vote goes with The Retro League and Retro Strikes Back.

Two personal notes: I don't have a mic and I'll have to go out and buy one soon (nor a Scype account for that matter).  And the only time that I would be able to do anything LIVE would be Friday or Saturday evening.  Otherwise my schedule is pretty crazy.  But obviously I'm not one of the main co-hosts.  This is just for reference if we start rotating people in or if we want everyone on the cast together for a go or two.

Speaking of Co-hosts are we all cool with Rob & Nick being the two primary hosts?

I like Rob's GoDaddy suggestion.  I say we go for it.

On the topic of the first episode, I think Rob & Nick might want to do a run through and see if they can get all the audacity and scype stuff worked out.  Maybe then you guys could let us know how easy or difficult it would be to try to record with 4 people simultaneously.  At the very least RubyClaw and I could record separately and send it in and someone could splice it into the show.  Maybe we could talk a little about ourselves and give a quick review of a game or talk bout our favorite retro game or one we've been playing, etc.  As far as setting a date for the first episode, I say the weekend of the 23rd and 24th would be a good goal.  What do you guys think?

Also I think we should flesh out an outline of the first episode.  Do we have anything like that, Rob or Nick?

On the topic of Intro Songs, I went back and searched online to show you guys my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE intro.  It's actually from The Gaming Historian, if any of you remember him.  Unfortunately he stopped making vids about 3 or 4 months ago and removed all of them from YouTube.  However, there are a few of his clips scattered on the outer rim of the internet.

Listen to this intro.  It's actually about a minute and 30 seconds into the film after the host introduces the topic.  So be patient.

** you don't have permission to see this link **

HOW EPIC!  Does anyone know this song?  It sounds incredibly familiar.
