I just got to World 8!
When do you guys feel that SMB3 becomes real challenging?
I would have to say World 6 and it only gets more difficult after that! I especially have problems with the last couple levels of World 7.

I decided to go for the authentic experience and play it on an original NES (OK, a top-loader) with an NES Advantage. I was surprised at how many secrets I remembered.. and how many levels where I knew there was something secret but couldn't recall where it was ** you don't have permission to see this link **
I have to say that SMB3 really set the bar for hidden stuff in games. Every single stage has at least one hidden item or room. I don't think there was a game with this many hidden items until GTA III, and maybe even it fell a little short. This was made before it was customary to include a \"% complete\" score in the game and I can't imagine what it would take to get a 100% at SMB3.
So back to the game.. I aced World 1 then starting dying on the dumbest things in World 2. I used to be able to play through at least world 5 or 6 before having problems so I guess you can get rusty at a game. Maybe next time I'll try warping to World 8 to see how long I last.

I managed to get to World 8 a couple days ago, but haven't played since. I'll have to pick it up again sometime tomorrow.
I think the game starts getting hard halfway through World 6 and ramps up with World 7 (man, I hate pirahna plants!) .

Just for the record, the first castle on the 8th world (with all the doors) is level I hate the most! That's where I'm at right now… :-/

I've made it to World 7. When does SMB3 get difficult? I dunno man, I sometimes have trouble in World 5 with all those crazy jumps. I agree that sometime in World 6 the difficulty becomes less forgiving. I gotta agree with hugues, SMB3 is full of stuff to discover and mess around with. There's a lot of secrets and the game-play is so open that you can do some funny stuff. Most of the time when I die its not from the difficulty of the level its because I was trying to do something silly like kick a turtle shell into a block so it will bounce off and hit another enemy somewhere and look awesome. That's something that makes a good game into a great game, when you can have fun playing it the way it was meant to be played and you can have fun your own way too. Most games are only one or the other and some games aren't fun no matter what you try to do with it.

I certainly agree with you Rob!
Well, I finished. I saved my P's and those Cloud thingys till the bitter end and they sure did come in handy and save me a score of headaches.

Congrats hemrawc. I played again tonight and I made it all the way to Bowser, but I can't beat him. It's hard for me to predict when to jump out of the way because he shoots fireballs at odd times, so I usually get killed by one when he just has to hit the floor one more time to die! ** you don't have permission to see this link **
By the way I got really lucky with the fortress you mentioned. I couldn't tell you how I figured out which doors to go through, but I pretty much figured they would hardly ever be next to each other. I was surprised to get through it on the first try. The two levels before it gave me one heck of a time though (stupid bullet bills and that flying sun that's hard to jump over…)

Yeah speaking of those two levels and the fortress.
Level 1 – I used a \"P.\"
Level 2 – I got lucky and had racoon power and was able to fly over certain sections.
Fortress – After dying several times I used a cloud and simply bypassed it. :-)

I just found out that on 5-7, if you use a P-wing and go down the first pipe, there is a white box. If you hold down and go behind it, then fly up to the pipe at the top of the screen, when you come out the other side, the enemies can't hurt you.

I just beat Bowser this morning! I'm playing the GBA version so I can go back to the previous worlds and try to finish all of the levels to get a Perfect on all of them. I went back to the first world and I've perfected up to world 6 so far. ** you don't have permission to see this link **

This Saturday (the 8th) will be three weeks from when we started. So, I'm thinking this week we should all post our final thoughts on SMB3. Then if we all vote for which game we want to play next by Friday night we could start playing the next game on Saturday.

hi guys.
i completed super mario bros 3 some time ago and i go back to beat bowser. heres a tip. the first time he jumps stand in the center o the platform of bricks. after he lands go stand next to the door and he will land on the platform above the door. this gives you time to place yourself on the far left of the hole he made. when he jumps he will land exacly in the hole. on the way to bowser always take the top route. when your on the falling blocks above the lava you have a chose of 4 paths. never go 4 the botom one, it gose back to the begining. allways go for the top one. you can go for the 3rd one but that drops down to the second one that takes you to bowser but is longer. the 3rd one has an item block so if you need a mushroom go for the 3rd one.
i hope this helps you defet bowser.
i'm selling my gameboy verison of smb3 on ebay with my game boy. so if you in england check it out.

@Doom234 – Thanks for the tips! I never thought of hiding next to the door when facing bowser. Sweet
Well, I guess it's time for those participating to leave their final comments for smb3 and make suggestions for the next game. I'm not sure how much I'll be able to play this upcoming game as med school has started this week and has been sucking massive amounts of time away (6:15am to 8:15pm) and by the time I'm finished all I want to do is sleep. But hopefully things will improve. In any case, I'll still be checking the forums.
So final smb3 comments? Suggestions for next game?
Thanks for everyone who has joined in on the \"Let's Play!\" I hope more will follow! (*cough* Jeromy *cough* Mike *cough*) ;-)

@Brucedickhamster – I actually have a soft spot for “A Boy and His Blob: Trouble in Blobalonia.” It's fun once you get the hang of it. I've actually beaten the game.
@Doom234 – I do own Ocarina of Time. Well, it was actually my brother's when we were growing up. I'd always watch people play it but have never actually played it myself…
Good suggestions!

Just found this thread and would like to participate in the next game. As for which game to play, I vote for a NES game. Doesn't matter which one.

I'm gonna vote for A Boy and His Blob. I've never played it and am very curious. Also, as my final thought for SMB3 I'm just going to go ahead and say: Best Video Game to come out of the '80s. Anyone agree?
