Would anybody be up for a forum-wide Let's Play?  By this I mean we collectively select one game (obviously retro, probably for the SNES or NES) and everyone plays through it at the same time.  We could open a thread on the forums to discuss strategy, stories, losses, and victories.

I think a RPG or Platformer would be an ideal choice.  I'm not sure if shumps or puzzle games (ie: Tetris) would be all that fun for a Let's Play.

Anyone up for it?  Feel free to make suggestions for the game?

Questions? Comments? Critiques?

I'm down it too.

They do something similar at Nintendo World Report. They don't normally talk about old/retro stuff so they call the feature 'retro-active'. They put a poll on the forum of five games and everyone votes on which one they want to play. Then everyone plays the game that got the most votes and they talk about it on their forums and podcast.

I bet a forum/community devoted to old games (like us) would get more into it than some people who only talk about it if it's on the Wii's virtual console. We could talk about playing the game for the first time as a kid, picking it up at a yard sale, how the heck do you beat that one boss, etc.

My suggestion for the first game we try it out with: Super Mario Bros 3.

Thanks Rob for the helpful comments.

I could go for something like Super Mario Bros 3, however, it is a bit overplayed.  I'm sure everyone could gleefully tell stories of SMB3 when they were a kid, which would greatly add to the \"Let's Play\" experience.   There's always going to be pros and cons for each game.  In any case, if we do go with SMB3 we shouldn't play with whistles.  I say that we narrow the choices down to 2 or 3 games and then have a vote (unless there is overwhelming support for a particular game from the get-go)

I was thinking something a little more obsure:

AD&D Pool of Radiance

Radia Wars (English version of course)

Little Nemo Dream Master (if you want a platformer)

If we want a quick and odd ball game we could play A Boy and His Blob

Super Mario Bros. 2 (the Japanese version aka: The Lost Levels)

So it's like a book club but for NES games, eh? SMB3 would be just fine to start with since I imagine most have an original copy they can play on an actual NES to get the full experience. If the idea works then we can move on to some lesser-known titles.

Oh, and one game we should try is Tombs & Treasure – the source of the \"incredibly tan Hispanic man\" bit… and it's one that I bet few have played.

Well, if there's no objections.  Let's begin Super Mario Bros. 3!

Hey, why don't we all decide on how long we're going to spend on each game (or how long until we start playing the next game).

Two weeks maybe? more? less?

And when we're done with SMB3 let's all vote for the one we like from hemrawc's list of 5 there to decide what will be the next game.

This might be long for some, but I think giving us at least a month for each game would be appropriate.  What do you guys think?

I love this idea! I agree with starting with SMB3, and I like the idea of keeping the time-span for each game between 2 to 3 weeks. To me it seems to be a reasonable amount of time to finish, or at least get a significant way into the game, and it would keep new games coming often enough that we wouldn't get bored with \"Let's Play\".

Also, if this becomes a serious thing, we should request a new section of the forum to be dedicated to this, so we don't have to deal with a single thread turning into a pile of posts because we've gone onto the 7th game (if you know what I mean).

I agree with RubyClaw, if this get popular enough we should probably move it to a separate forum section.  In any case, I think SMB3 will do well as a test run.  So post your questions, comments, trials, and tribulations here!

I've actually had some time today to play Mario today.  Currently I'm on World 5, I just beat good ole' Big World!  My favorite!  Does anyone else have a favorite world or level?

Also does anyone know how to get a star everytime on the final box at each level?  When I was a kid I always thought you simply had to have your \"P\" meter all the way up and jump into the box and you'd get the star everytime.  However, since I've been playing today I've gotten several mushrooms using that method.  It's extremely frustrating when you have 2 stars in your box and you come up with a mushroom at the end of the level.  Strangely enough I have yet to get a flower (in one of the end boxes) at all despite the fact I'm halfway through the game…weird.

Another thing I just noticed is that on the level shaped like a pyramid, instead of the ordinary block, (I think it's right before the final castle on world 2 or 3) there's a part of that level where you can nearly get stuck.  You have to have leaf power and then about half way through you'll see a pipe whose entrance is obstructed by a series of unbreakable blocks.  If you get enough speed you can fly around the blocks and access the pipe.  Inside there are a bunch of coins, breakable boxes, and a P Tombstone.  After you get the coins you obviously hit the P.  However, if you jump past the P into the left hand corner of the screen you nearly get stuck.  I accidentally did this and I thought I might have to start over.  Thankfully after a couple minutes of fooling with the controls mario barely jump back out.  It's difficult to explain unless you go to the level and do it yourself.  Has anyone had an experience where they got completely stuck and had to reset SMB3?

The last time I played all the way through the NES version of SMB3, I was able to get quite a few stars using the \"P\" meter method you described. I don't know of any other method though. I suppose you could just experiment with waiting a certain amount of time after you reach the block.

What I want to know is how to get a star on that stupid line-em-up game. The best I can usually do is a mushroom (if I can even get that to line up…normally I get the first two pieces, but then botch the last one).

I've never gotten myself stuck, but I'll have to try to find that area in the second world you mentioned when I start playing the game.

Just got to World 6.

I think I figured out the whole card thing at the very end of each level.  Not only do you have to get your P meter all the way up but you also have to hit the very left hand corner of the box.  If you hit the box broad side you get a mushroom.  I'm almost positive that's it.  Tell me if anyone experiences differently.

@RubyClaw: I'm horrible with the dang line-em-up game.  I use to rock it when I was a kid…I don't know what happened as I grew older.  I guess I just lost my touch.  I think part of the trick is clicking the button right before the one you want appears on the screen.  The last third is the hardest part of the picture to line up!

Till next time…

The line-up game and the star/mushroom/flower thing are both timing based, but the 'Memory' type game where you turn over cards isn't. It's pre-set and there's only 8 ways those cards will be face-down.

When I was 10 years old and the game first came out, the friend of mine who owned it told me a rumor that had been going around our grade-school. He said there was a certain level in world 5 (up in the clouds where the screen scrolled automatically) where you could find: not a tanooki suit, not a hammer suit, but a KOOPA SUIT that would turn you into one of the Koopa kids! I tried really hard to find it and eventually called up the Nintendo Power game counselors, only to have them tell me that there is no such thing. Man, how cool would it have been to play as one of the bosses in SMB3?

Ok, I started the game today and so far, I've made it about halfway through World 4. I don't know if anyone else has ever had this problem, but until I got into World 3, I only got fire flowers from the Toad Houses, which was starting to piss me off. lol

I also totally forgot about the island in World 3 with the Toad Houses and line-em-up levels! Crap!

Oh well, just makes the rest of the game a bit more challenging I guess…

(That's a great Koopa Suit story by the way, JungleRatRob)

Update for July 22nd

I played some more this morning and got to the airship in World 5. I kept getting my ass kicked by Roy Koopa because of his stun-bounce and it started pissing me off so I'm giving up until tonight. lol

I WANT A KOOPA SUIT!!!  :-)  Good story, Rob!

As far as the toad houses go, I always choose the middle.  So far I've only gotten mushrooms, leafs, and a tanooki suit (and maybe a frog suit…I don't remember).  But speaking of rumors that was the rumor I heard of as a kid.  Always choose the middel box in toad's house.  I really don't know if it works, but it seems to be helping this go around.

The way I play Roy Koopa is hit him as soon as I get in the room.  Let him dance around like he does after he gets hit and then as soon as he wake up from his dancing stupor hit him again before he has the chance of using his wand or stomping power.  Also (you probably know this) but the stomping-induced stun doesn't effect you if you are in the air.  So if you see he's about to stun-bounce, JUMP!

Unfortunately, I'm out of town and I don't have access to SMB3.  So I'll still be on world 6 till Monday.

Keep it retro!

Even though I suggested that this be the game we all play, I hadn't played a 2-d Mario game in years before this. So it had been literally years since I enjoyed things like…

*dying on level 1-1 like a noob
*hitting a [?] block only to have the mushroom move the wrong direction and fall into a pit
*making a super hard jump by rebounding off of a flying enemy on the first try
*winning the sliding match-up game by quickly mashing buttons
*sliding down a slope, literally killing monsters with my butt
*being eaten by a fish with giant lips
*teasing a chain-chomp by getting close to it and running away

So far I've made it to world 4. Man, I never liked water-levels in Mario games which is why I really like the Frog Suit.

I remember the first time I played this game I read the Princess' letter after World 1, which warned about Boo's and said \"I have enclosed a jewel that protects you\". The way it was worded made be think that the jewel (a P-wing) protected you from ghosts. So I wasted my very first P-wing on the mini-dungeon of World 2.
I developed a sort of victory dance for the airship/world bosses: after beating a Koopa Kid I always jump and catch the wand before it hits the floor.

The boxes in the mushroom houses are completely random. It doesn't matter which one you choose. I discovered this after using save states to try and figure out the system between the bonus levels one boring summer afternoon.

Thanks for the tip Eltanin!

@Rob: I have to admit when I first booted up SMB3 to play it for the \"Let's Play\" I died right off the back on that first goomba. Man I love retro games!  :-)

Speaking of the P-Wing, I just noticed for the first time when playing SMB3 last week that the princess says the P-Wing will protect you from Boo's.  I never noticed that when I was a kid.  I probably was too busy mashing the buttons so I could move on to the next world.
