Recently on an airplane I saw someone whip out a Game Boy Color and start playing. It's the first time I've seen anything older than a GBA in public. With so many portables with rechargable batteries available now I couldn't believe someone was still using a classic model (although I certainly can respect it).
When's the last time you've seen an orignal Game Boy or Game Boy Color being played in public (or done it yourself)?

I may be the exception but I know I've taken all my retro handhelds out and played them in public.
But I can't remember the last time I saw someone playing the old gameboys

Hugues,
That is a great question actually. I still play my little red Gameboy Pocket. I work a lot and my job is mentally draining so I play in little bits. I'll play a little PS3 or Wii when I get home, but throughout the day I play various handhelds. I keep my GBA SP in my work bag so I can play a little here and there during the day. I play my DS in bed if I can't sleep. I keep my Gameboy Pocket in my backpack which I take with me hiking or camping, or sometimes just for out for the day. I do notice people stare. In fact in grad school before I got the SP and DS I used to ride the subway playing the Pocket. Children in particular look at you with pity. I still have quite a few older games, not sure I trust the ability to get rechargeable batteries for the SP.
I would love to pick up an original Gameboy and rock that out in public, on one hand I don't know if my eyes can take the older screen but I certainly know my hands would like the feel (I get cramps playing anything small). I've been considering giving the Pocket up, possibly adding it to the NES Junk Box, but there is something to be said for playing the original tetris in two colors.

I have not played any of my gameboys in public in a few years. But just because you posted this I may try to take the old one out somewhere and get a pic of me playing it where no one would expect it.

Your post reminded me that I leave a few old Mattel handhelds (repros actually) out at my desk at work. They're there for stress relief and conversation… and from the way they go through batteries are entertaining the nighttime security too. I never thought to leave an old Game Boy out but now if I spot one at a garage sale I think I'll get an extra one for the office.
That is a great idea to take an old Game Boy out for trips like that – if I broke/lost my SP, Micro, or DS I'd be bummed. If it was one of the older (beat-up) Game Boys it wouldn't be a big deal. Funny comment about being looked on with pity, kids today probably associate playing an older Game Boy with being poor ** you don't have permission to see this link **

Speaking of all this retro tech reminds me of a story, I should relate it here before I forget and particularly because of the nature of this site. Years ago, probably 1999, a ex-roommate of mine's birthday was coming up. He had a pristine collection of NES games. He was one of those meticulous types; his NES was mint, no blowing or shifting of the carts, it worked every time. His games were all in their original sleeves with manuals (he clearly had bought everything original now yard sales here). My collection was a lot more forgiving. One day I came across a R.O.B. at a used CD/Collectibles store so I bought it. I didn't know that it was missing the little discs, I'd never actually seen one work. I think I paid like $80 bucks for it too – never again.
After a few months he was actually able to get copies of Gyromite and Stackup. He tried to get it working but it wouldn't. He called me and I called Nintendo. I wish I had the letter they sent me still, but the basic gist of it was \"WTF, no body knows how those things work here…we have a couple and we use them as conversational pieces and sometimes and phone holders.\" That's it story over, I wonder if he ever got the parts?

Nice question,
Now the best awnser there is. I played with it today and yesterday with my gameboy color in the train. (in my bag is also a mirco)
I Just bought Mario Tennis for the Gameboy color. for only € 2 euro. And because my son has holiday now I can't borrow his SP to play the game with a backlight. And playing with the GBC gives me the extra retro feeling.
I also saw an other post in this forum about gamerooms. Well I don't have a gameroom (my house is to small) But I have managed to create a gamecorner for me and my son.
To see it, just visit my personal site (not findeble bij google) and click on the left site on Mijn Gamekast (** you don't have permission to see this link **)
