I have two GBA's but never had an sp, until now. I had some store credit at gamestop left from trading in thoes ps3 games I got from the yardsale a2 weeks ago so I bit the bullit and picked up a backlit gba sp. The system is in excellent condition with no marks at all on the screen. I also picked up Maro Golf which is an excellent game. I beat it back in the day but I really wanted to get into it again.
I still want to get the two golden sun games. I completed the first one a few years ago but never had a chance to play part 2. I think you can use the save from the first one to start the second some how.

I wouldn't be in too big a hurry to play Golden Sun 2: the Lost Age. I played through the first one also and started the 2nd game thinking I would bring over my characters/save game. I've played through about half of the second game and so far no party members from the first game have shown up, just characters who were NPC's in the story of the 1st one. I really like the combat, but I can't stand the puzzles. If you can find Golden Sun 2 cheap then I'd say its at least worth a try but don't get your hopes up for keeping all the items/levels/djinn that you built up in the first game.
On the subject of GBA games for your new SP, have you played any of these: Metroid Fusion, Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon, or Car Battler Joe?

Gamestop has them for $7.99 and $9.99 so I really can't complain about the price. I have to play the first one again so I can remember the story.

Speaking of your GBA SP Gamestop experience, thanks for telling us that you got Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories for 10 bucks! After I heard that, I ran out to my local Gamestop the next day and bought the only copy they had. It was in pretty decent condition, except for a pen mark across the label that I hadn't noticed until I brought it home. Oh well… =/
If you like Kingdom Hearts at all, I recommend you play it because it's a pretty sweet game for the GBA.
Along with JungleRatRob, I recommend Metroid Fusion also.

I played my SP all the time when I got it. Recently got a Micro. I've been sneaking in some play time at work with that. I'd recommend getting these games:
Metroid Fusion
Metroid Zero Mission
Mario Tennis Advanced Tour
Ninja Cop (or Ninja 5-0, whatever it's called here)
The Castlevania double pack
Zelda Minish Cap
Awesome stuff here. The SNES is my favorite console of all time, so I really dig the 16-bit graphics on the GBA. Also, this is my first post, so I'd like to thank you guys for doing the retrocast. It helps me get through the work day.

Me and my son have had the SP for a while now. but we have added the micro to our collection a few weeks ago and it is my most loved handheld. Is so smal i can always take it with me in my pocket. Most of the time's i have a Mario game in it. these day's i'm playing Mario Kart (Retro Tracks)
The Advance handhelds are the Retro handheld just because of the SNES games on it.
